From Insomnia to a restful sleep
Many of us will have experienced sleep problems at some time, by either not falling asleep easily or not staying asleep for long enough to feel refreshed the next morning. Disrupted sleep can have several causes, such as thinking about something that upset you during the day or an event coming up that makes you feel nervous and restless. Or it may have been the alcohol or coffee you drank to close to bedtime or watching a disturbing movie. Other people may have shift work and find it difficult to stay in a good sleeping routine. Either way, a disturbed sleep can leave you feeling drained and irritable in the morning and throughout your day.
The most common symptoms of Insomnia (depending on individual circumstances) are:
Being awake for long periods at night.
Difficulty to fall asleep.
Waking up several times during the night or waking up too early and not being able to fall back to sleep.
Feeling tired and drained the next morning and/or during the day.
Difficulty to concentrate or function properly.
Feeling irritable.
If you have been experiencing insomnia and sleeping problems for a few months, the fear of it continuing can cause you to lose even more sleep. It then becomes a vicious cycle that makes insomnia even worse. Lack of sleep will impact on your physical and mental health if it is not addressed quickly.
What are the most common causes of Insomnia?
There are several causes that can create Insomnia, but the most common one is that we are thinking or worrying too much. And you know the feeling when you lie in bed and desperately want to fall asleep and the more you try to fall asleep, the more difficult it becomes to get relaxed. Sleep comes once we allow it to happen and when we let our body relax.
Insomnia is often a symptom of Anxiety and Stress. Anxiety is a fear and like stress produces adrenaline and cortisol in your body, the fight and flight chemical that keeps us awake.
To fall asleep, you need to allow this to happen, and for that to happen you need to feel safe so you can drop into the unconscious state. If there is an internal conflict or resistance in your subconscious mind, then your conscious will to fall asleep may not work. Your subconscious mind holds your beliefs, thoughts and feelings and any excessive feelings and unwanted emotions can trouble you in the present.
How can Insomnia be treated?
It is important that you first speak with your doctor to eliminate any physical causes. Your doctor may prescribe medication to help you to sleep. This can be helpful and effective, but it is important to find out the underlying causes of the problem.
Hypnotherapy can be another or complementary treatment option that many people find effective. With hypnosis, the potential underlying causes can be identified, and you can learn to relax and then find it more easy to fall asleep. For example, if anxiety or depression is the cause of your insomnia, hypnosis can help you to overcome the underlying issues and may then help to improve your sleeping patterns too. If a habit, such as drinking too much alcohol or coffee is causing your insomnia, hypnotherapy can assist you to break this habit.
