Depression and Trauma
Many of us may feel sad, moody or down from time to time, but some people experience these feelings more intensely and for a long period of time (weeks, months or even years). The feeling of being overwhelmed or unable to cope may result from prolonged periods of stress or a traumatic incident that happened in the past or in more recent times. Depression is more than just a low mood – it's a serious condition that has an impact on both your physical and mental health.
Generally, depression also does not always result from a single event, but from a mix of events and factors. Depression may be a reaction to a distressing or traumatic event that occurred in your past or an ongoing trauma. The trauma could have been a loss of a family member and you may have not been able to fully grief the loss, accept it and to process the feelings about the person. Other traumatic events can include losing a job, a divorce, suffering emotional or physical abuse or financial hardships.
Depression and Trauma impacts how you think, feel and act, which makes it more difficult for you to manage your daily activities and tasks and interferes with study, work, and relationships. If you feel sad, down or miserable most of the time and have felt like this for a prolonged period of time you may associate to some of the symptoms of depression and PTSD below:
Loosing interest in daily activities
Emotional eating or addictions
Insomnia
Exhaustion
Extreme sadness
Stress and anxiety
Often these symptoms are treated with medication prescribed by your doctor. Anti-depressants, sleep medication, and your doctor may suggest other supporting programs to you. You may have seen a counsellor with whom you can talk about your feelings and you are taught how to relax and concentrate on positive self-talk or affirmations. These treatments are aimed to relief the symptoms, but may not address or treat the underlying cause of the depression and trauma.
How Hypnotherapy and EMDR can assist you to overcome depression and trauma
Hypnosis and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) are powerful therapeutic techniques that can significantly assist in treating depression and trauma.
Power in You Hypnotherapy aims to help you identify and overcome deeper issues contributing to depression by working at the subconscious level, where unresolved emotions are stored. By facilitating relaxation and focused concentration, hypnosis enables you to release stored emotions, reframe traumatic experiences, and replace negative beliefs with positive suggestions. This process can lead to improved mental clarity, emotional resilience, and a renewed sense of hope.
EMDR, on the other hand, is specifically designed to help individuals process traumatic memories. By using guided eye movements, EMDR helps to desensitize distressing memories, making them less intrusive and easier to manage. This technique promotes healing by enabling individuals to integrate their traumatic experiences, reducing symptoms of PTSD, anxiety, and depression.
Prior to any EMDR therapy (optional) we prepare you for the process with relaxation and stabilisation therapy including hypnosis.
Together, hypnosis and EMDR offer a holistic approach to mental health, empowering you to heal from the past, reclaim your emotional well-being, and move forward with confidence and positivity.
